Developing Goalkeepers Using Game-Based Practice

Goalkeepers develop through the same game-based principles as field players.

The Coaching Blueprint·1 min read·

Goalkeepers are field players who can use their hands in the penalty area.

This principle changes everything. A goalkeeper should:

  • Build up with feet (not just throw/kick long)
  • Play 1v1 defending outside the box
  • Distribute to support field play
  • Read the game ahead like any defender

Practice Design

Build-up work: GK practices receiving from defenders, scanning, and distributing short. This develops decision-making.

1v1 defending: GK practices 1v1 outside the box (feet only). This develops footwork and confidence.

Handling practice: Handled under pressure (players attacking the box). This develops decision-making under pressure, not just reflexes.

The Philosophy

A goalkeeper who can only use their hands is limited. A goalkeeper who is a field player with exceptional hand skills is dangerous.
