Facilities Setup: How to Design Pitches for Multiple Groups

Facility design reflects coaching philosophy. Design for small-sided, adaptive training.

The Coaching Blueprint·1 min read·

A club's facilities reflect its philosophy. If you want small-sided, game-based training, you need spaces that support it.

Space Recommendations

For U6-U8: 3-4 small pitches (15x12) that can run simultaneously

For U9-U11: 2 medium pitches (30x25) or 4 small pitches

For U12+: 1-2 full-sized pitches with the ability to divide into smaller areas

The key is flexibility. Goals, cones, and lines should be moveable so space can be adjusted mid-session.

Equipment

  • Small cones (for marking spaces)
  • Full-sized goals (adjustable height)
  • Balls (15-20% more than you think you need; some always get lost)
  • Bibs (multiple colours for role changes)
  • Drink bottles and first aid

The Culture Message

Your facility design sends a message. Small pitches and moveable goals say: "We believe in game-based, adaptive training." Fixed large pitches and permanent formations say: "We believe in traditional football."

Choose intentionally.
